In this project, we had the challenging task of creating an Aurora Borealis tool for Houdini and capable of been exported to other softwares or to be run with Houdini Engine.
The tool was based in the paper "Simulating the Aurora Borealis", by authors: Gladimir V. G. Baranoski, Peter Shirley, Jon G. Rokne, Trond Trondsen and Rui Bastos, but for the final version, a more "artistic friendly" approach was used, although the paper os very important to explain how the phenomenon happens, so we could cheat it.
Here a test scene with some recordings of the tool at work.
The tool was built using a particle approach and then converted to vdb volumes and tweaked.
The network used for the tool inner workings.
The part of the paper which contains the algorithm.
